Evanescence’s Amy Lee: “What we’re up against now is something that involves everyone”

As they prepare to release their first album proper since 2011, Marianne Eloise meets Evanescence’s Amy Lee for a conversation about loss, compromise, truth and the band’s enduring legacy.

Even over the phone, Amy Lee’s presence is soothing. She’s achieved, or earned, a level of calm that comes only with experience, offering her insights and occasionally letting out a big, infectious laugh. At home in Nashville with her husband and six-year-old son, the Evanescence frontwoman’s life has taken a change of pace after moving away from New York last year. She’s been leaning into her new languid lifestyle, particularly after the pandemic began. “I was like, ‘sweet, I’m gonna make homemade dumplings and spend time with my son’ more than anything. I was grateful for that, because we were about to go off on tour and we were going to be apart for a bit,” she tells me.

Ever the workaholic, however, it didn’t take long before Lee was intimidated by the empty space in front of her, and she started to create. “The music is saving me. I’ve gotten to a place now where I am kind of overwhelmed by all of the work I’ve put on top of myself. But honestly, it feels so much better than doing nothing,” she confesses. “Anxiety just takes over. Being able to pour my frustrations and my feelings and my energy into making something that I love and believe in has been saving my life.”

Japan’s Wagakki Band & Evanescence’s Amy Lee Sit Down to Talk First Impressions and Collaborating

In February, Japan’s Wagakki Band invited Evanescence‘s Amy Lee for a one-night-only concert called the “Premium Symphonic Night Vol.2” at Osaka-Jo Hall in Japan. Vocalist Yuko Suzuhana and guitarist Machiya spoke with Lee before the show and compared notes on their initial impressions of each other’s band and performances and shared their thoughts on collaborating, both onstage and in the studio.

The fruit of their collaboration, “Sakura Rising,” is streaming now and Amy Lee comments, “This song is about unity, and hope. From opposite sides of the world we face the same problems, and we need to fight together instead of fighting each other.”

Below is an excerpt from the long interview moderated by Billboard Japan, in which the three artists discuss their respective styles of music, ideas on collaborating, ways to break into the international music scene and more.

Billboard Japan: Amy, how did you find out about Waggaki Band and what was your impression when you first heard them?

Amy Lee: We’re on the same record label, so I was introduced to their music by them. I became their fan right away, I thought it was fascinating and completely unique. Never heard anything like it. And in a weird way it reminded me of myself. So yeah, I just loved it right away.

Amy Lee on Bring Me To Life – the song that made Evanescence megastars

On April 22, 2003, Evanescence’s debut single Bring Me To Life introduced the band to the world. The song, which featured on the Daredevil soundtrack, swiftly stormed charts across the globe, bagging the No.1 spot in five countries. It was inspired by an encounter in a restaurant, a moment that would change singer and band-leader Amy Lee’s life in more ways than one.

Here’s how it came to life.

WagakkiBand’s single “Sakura Rising” feat Amy Lee is Out Now

WagakkiBand put out a brand new single titled Sakura Rising featuring the heavenly voice of Amy Lee, lead singer of american band Evanescence. The song arrived on September 18 to digital platforms and will be included as the lead track in WagakkiBand’s upcoming full album Tokyo Singing, which comes out on October 14.

The single Sakura Rising was accompanied by an animated lyric video—a collaboration between Japanese and American illustrators—that depicts the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on everybody’s life.

The sakura (cherry blossom) in the video is used as a symbol of how people are still connected despite being physically apart. This is best exemplified by the collaboration between WagakkiBand and Amy Lee as they were hard at work even during the lockdown. While the collaboration song Sakura Rising took shape with guitarist Machiya and Amy in the studio a day before the joint performance in Osaka, it was only pieced together and finished later by exchanging audio files online, from Japan to the US, vice versa.

The members of both parties shared their thoughts on the experience:
